Sustainability

We are not going to make lofty claims about net zero targets, planting thousands of trees, using only renewable energy and sourcing all our materials and raw products in an environmentally friendly way. But we aim to do our little bit where we can!

Planet

It is an undeniable truth (regardless of what some say) that humans as a whole are destroying the planet we live on……….pollution, greenhouse gases, population explosions, destroying habitat that wildlife rely on………

It is not easy for a small company with fairly heavy production energy requirements, who source raw materials from all around the world and who's packaging is often legislated for, to be a leader in sustainability. But we try where we can!

Most of our raw leaf and many other materials arrives in cardboard boxes. These are re-used where possible and recycled where not. We have our own shredder and produce packaging material from shredded boxes.

For raw tobacco leaf we try and buy from companies that have a good approach to sustainability and focus on being governed by international standards and best practices in relation to human rights, protecting the environment, ethical and efficient operations. Our main supplier is committed to reducing their environmental impact through responsible practices, reducing their global carbon footprint, protect natural habitats in the supply chain, and educating growers on sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. They actively work to strengthen the communities where their tobacco growers, technicians, and employees work and live through community programmes and are committed to business practices that respect the human rights of their farmers around the globe.

Our energy requirements come from various sources - electric, gas and oil.  Our main electric company provides Zero Carbon Electricity as standard. Our gas supplier is focusing on reducing emissions and moving away from standard LPG towards sustainable alternatives to meet Net Zero goals as well as reducing operational emissions. Two of our buildings have solar panels fitted (although a lack of sun light in Kendal makes their efficiency a little dubious).

Each unit has its own recycling bins so paper/cardboard, plastic, glass and tin cans are taken to the recycling depot.

People

We are a very small company but believe that each individual should be allowed to maximise their potential and be a part of the decision making process. We aim to build a workplace where every employee is valued, and can do their best work – together as part of a team. Our vision is to cultivate a culture where every employee feels they can put forward ideas and through this approach, the collective potential is amplified and expanded. And that means better productivity, quality is maintained and we can keep bringing you the best pipe and hand rolling tobacco we can.

Community & Partnership Overview

As a company we are looking to contribute a percentage of profits to do good on a global scale and in our own area. We live in a beautiful part of the world!

The majority of our staff are also massive dog lovers (with the odd cat owner thrown in) and as our Managing Director has run a dog charity for over 14 years, rescuing dogs from Eastern Europe and involved in Spanish dog rescue and being a trustee of the local RSPCA branch, we will be looking at ways to help our four legged friends more.

Our office is dog friendly and our office dog, Ellie, rules the roost, doing the rounds each morning for various desk breakfast pitstops.

We think we need to be kinder to the planet we currently live on and do what we can, in whatever small ways are possible to protect it.
